After seven years since the first generation of the Audi A5 Sportback was launched, full details of the newest incarnation of the A5 and S5 have been unveiled. The newest model comes with a completely re-engineered suspension system as well as enhanced performance and innovative driver assistance systems.
Inside, the new Audi S5 Sportback has benefited from some clever engineering as interior length has been increased resulting in increased space for both front and rear seat passengers alike. The A5 Sportback also boasts a 480 litre boot which rates among the best in class.
The suspension system in both the front and rear have both been redesigned to ensure an even smother driving experience and while the Audi drive select dynamic handling system is standard the optional extra of adaptive dampers ensures that the A5 and S5 perform in a dynamic yet comfortable manner. Feedback and precision of the steering is enhanced also through the introduction of a new electromechanical power steering system.
The engine range for the new Audi A5 Sportback has also received an overhaul. Audi claims to have reduced fuel consumption by up to 22% while increasing power output by up to 17%. Power is delivered through a range of two TFSI petrol engines and three TDI diesel engines producing between 190bhp and 286bhp of power. This power is delivered to the road through a six speed manual transmission, a seven speed S tronic dual clutch transmission or an eight speed tiptronic unit which is also available. When it comes to the S5 Sportback featuring Quattro and an eight speed tiptronic as standard, the V6 turbo engine will accelerate from 0 – 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. Mated with the power pack, The Audi S5 will deliver 354bhp along with 500Nm of torque.
For those of you who like all the new technology included, the Audi virtual cockpit will be available as an optional extra.
The technological advances continue into the wide range of driver assistance packages which will also be available. Adaptive cruise control Stop & Go system which includes traffic jam assist provides assistance to drivers in slow moving traffic up to a driving speed of 65 km/h by assuming the tasks of braking and accelerating the car. Collision avoidance assist intervenes if the car needs to drive around an accident by assessing information from the front camera, ACC and radar sensors and computes a recommended driving line within a fraction of a second.
The new Audi A5 and S5 Sportback will be available in Irish showrooms from the start of 2017 while pricing is expected to be released closer to the launch date.
