The new Outlander Plug-In Hybrid EV 4WD SUV to reach Irish customers next month comes with a high level of technology for all round safety, EV technology, driver focused technology as well as enhanced exterior design and high quality, refined interior. Having achieved a 5-Star NCAP rating the Outlander PHEV incorporates top safety equipment including seven airbags (front, side and curtain) and three ISO-FIX child seat anchors, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist, Active Stability and Traction Control. It also features Mitsubishi’s renowned Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) with NORMAL, SNOW, LOCK and SPORT Mode, all underpinned by Mitsubishi’s RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body.
The Instyle and S-Edition models are equipped with Forward Collision Mitigation System (providing a visible and audible warning if a collision risk has been identified, escalating to autonomous braking if a high risk of collision has been determined), Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning and Automatic High Beams. Adding to this level of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) the S-Edition also includes Blind Spot Warning (BSW) with Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Ultrasonic Misacceleration System (UMS) (in case the driver mistakenly presses the accelerator when stationary or driving at low speeds). The PHEV Operating System on all specifications includes EV Priority Mode that allows the driver to run the PHEV on electric mode only for up to 45km, Battery Save Mode and Battery Charge Modes. All models are supplied with Mode 2 and Mode 3 charging cables for home and public charging, as well as Quick charger ports. The battery can be charged for as little as €1.38 The Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) acts to warn pedestrians of the approaching vehicle below 35 km/h when in silent EV Mode, i.e. no engine noise.

Outlander PHEV offers three Drive Modes, all automatically activated by the PHEV
Operating System and with a system bias to switch to EV Mode as often and as soon as possible, all offering permanent electric 4WD:
Pure EV Mode:
- Car powered by the Front & Rear Electric Motors
- Energy sourced from the Battery
- 45km EV driving range at speeds of up to 135km/h (where legal to do so)
Series Hybrid Mode:
- Car still powered by the Front & Rear Motors
- Engine engaged to run the Generator, to charge the Battery while driving
- Mode automatically activated – for 3-10 mn max – for sudden accelerations or driving uphill. Also when the state of charge of the battery is too low.
- System bias to switch back to Pure EV Mode as often/soon as possible
- Engine also punctually & automatically activated to keep the catalytic converter in optimum condition – the Operating System’s mapping allows for 89 days of electric-only driving, on the 90th day the petrol engine will be automatically started to protect the fuel injection system.
Parallel Hybrid Mode:
- Engine powers the front wheels (via the Multi-Mode front transaxle)
- Front Motor assists the Engine + Rear motor keeps driving the rear wheels
- Mode automatically activated at high-speed above 135 km/h (where legal to do so)
- System bias to switch back to Series Hybrid Mode (or Pure EV Mode below 135 km/h) as often/soon as possible
- Engine also engaged to charge through the Generator, using surplus torque
