From tomorrow Friday 26 October first-time drink-driving offenders will be automatically banned from driving for three months if caught with blood-alcohol levels of between 50 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood and 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood. Currently, drivers caught at these levels receive three penalty points and no driving ban. Alcohol is a factor in 38% of fatal crashes, and any amount of it impairs driving and increases the risk of a collision. This is not an opinion, it’s a scientific fact. (RSA) According to the RSA, an average of 180 drivers were arrested each week in 2017 on suspicion of driving under the influence, while enforcement statistics for the first nine months of 2018 show more than 6,562 motorists arrested for driving under the influence.

Many drivers get behind the wheel the morning after, unwittingly over the legal blood-alcohol limit. A personal breathalyser helps you to know when alcohol has cleared your system the next day.  It could be a life-saver for you, your passengers and other road users. The award-winning AlcoSense Excel breathalyser which can be used by drivers to determine their blood-alcohol levels and prevent them from unintentionally drink-driving the morning after is now available in Ireland. The AlcoSense Excel senses the volume of breath exhaled during the test and takes a reading after 1.2 litres of air – ensuring the most accurate and consistent sample is always taken, with easy-to-read on-screen prompts.

AlcoSense Excel uses a smaller version of the identical fuel cell sensor used in several European and US police breathalysers, and the AlcoSense Excel can be set to any worldwide limit when driving abroad. To improve accuracy even further, readings are fine-tuned according to temperature so even if there is the biggest snowfall for 30 years, the Excel will compensate to ensure the correct reading. AlcoSense Excel is manufactured under ISO13485 conditions, the benchmark in medical device quality systems. The AlcoSense Excel breathalyser is available in Ireland from Halfords at €119.99 or direct from the company’s website, www.alcosense.co.uk.
