Mini Cooper S Coupé

This new Mini Coupé offers Mini enthusiasts a sportier alternative to the hatch model. The Mini Coupé has a stiffer chassis and a lower centre of gravity compared to the standard hatch, which enhances the driving experience. Whilst the standard Cooper S provides a sporty drive, the Coupé is more involving and provides increased feedback from the front wheels to the steering wheel. It’s got go-kart-like handling with razor sharp responsiveness to the driver’s inputs.

The Cooper S model I drove is powered by a 1.6l engine, complete with a twin-scroll turbocharger and direct injection, which produces a hefty 184hp in the Coupé, which combined with 240Nm of torque, propels the Mini along at a fair rate of knots. Select the Sport mode and the throttle response is sharpened for instant acceleration on demand. When you lift off the accelerator there’s a pleasing burble emitted from the centre twin-exhausts. Whilst the drive is excellent, there’s some road noise transmitted into the cabin.

The interior of the Coupé resembles other models within the large Mini family, the quality of materials used is to the high standard that Mini owners have become accustomed too. The driving position is nice and low, with a steeper windscreen and lower roof you’re treated to the two-seater sportscar experience. As a result of the demise of the rear seats the Coupé has 280 litres of luggage space, which is easily accessible from the rear tailgate, and also from inside through a hatch behind the seats.

Priced from €24,400 the Coupé is close on an additional €2,500 over the Hatch. The look can divide opinion, if you’re after a convertible there’s also a roadster version on its way shortly which will come equipped with a soft-top. Personally, I’d opt for the Coupé, it’s a fine addition to the Mini range.
