The first generation BMW six series was a sleek looking machine, apart from a somewhat awkward rear-end. BMW’s designers have certainly enhanced its looks with this new model. My test car was fitted with the optional M Sport trim, the exterior benefits from sports alloys and sculpted bumpers, whilst the interior is treated to leather sports seats and anthracite headlining. The dash is dominated by the large colour screen which is central to BMW’s intuitive iDrive. Whilst the front seats provide comfort, there’s little room for rear seat occupants, but who buys a luxury coupé for rear passenger space? There is however a large boot which will easily accommodate your luggage.
There are five different driving modes to choose from, from Eco Pro to Sport Plus, each offering a different responsiveness from the throttle, engine and gearbox. In Eco Pro mode, the car will run all the electronic systems such as the climate control at their most efficient to aid fuel consumption. The main advantage of this engine, apart from its impressive power output is its fuel efficiency, it can return a combined fuel consumption of 5.5l/100km. It’s now possible to have performance and affordable motoring in one, well that is apart from the asking price, at €95,180 starting price this is an expensive motor, but it’s right up there with the best from the likes of Aston Martin and Porsche.
The most impressive feature of this car is its power delivery, there’s been considerable progress made over the last few years in the development of diesel engines. At the heart of the 640d is a 3-litre twin-turbo in-line six cylinder engine, it produces 313hp but more importantly it delivers an astounding 630Nm of torque. This is more than the outgoing BMW M5. The 640d offers luxury and high performance in a refined package.
