It looks like Fiat are set to launch their own roadster similar to Mazda’s highly-successful MX-5. FIAT and Mazda have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding to develop and manufacture a new roadster. If this proceeds Mazda and FIAT will develop two lightweight, rear-wheel drive, two-seaters with each one using its own engine configurations. Both cars will be manufactured at Mazda’s Hiroshima plant in Japan with production due to commence in 2015. They hope to sign the final agreement in the second-half of 2012.
Commenting on the announcement Sergio Marchionne, FIAT Group Automobiles CEO, said “This agreement clearly demonstrates our commitment to Alfa Romeo and the determination to grow it into a truly global brand. By partnering with Mazda, we will be co-operating with the recognized leader in compact rear-drive vehicle architectures in order to deliver an exciting and stylish roadster in the Alfa Romeo tradition. We are appreciative of this collaboration with Mazda and look forward to maintaining a fruitful and continuous relationship.”
