Mitsubishi’s new Outlander certainly sets off on a positive note, with admirable looks, low emissions and increased levels of comfort, it’s a far superior motor than its predecessor. Our test car was finished in copper metallic, a rich colour which enhances the Outlander’s appearance.
There are two variants on offer, a two-wheel drive five-seater model and a four-wheel drive seven-seater version. Both models are powered by the same 2.2-litre DI-D diesel engine. It’s an efficient unit, offering 4.8L/100km on a combined run and with 150hp and 380Nm of torque produced, it’s capable of delivering ample performance for the vast majority of drives. The five-seater Outlander is equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, the seven-seater variant can be specified with either a manual or automatic transmission. The Outlander offers an excellent driving position, with clear all-round visibility. The seven-seater can accommodate seven occupants, although the fold-down third row of seats are really only suitable for short journeys due to their compact size.
The fit and finish has taken a notable step-up over its precursor. Across Ireland the Outlander is available in just one standard level of specification, it’s extremely generous and includes cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, keyless entry, climate control, daytime running lights, hill start assist and privacy glass amongst many others.
Our test car was the four-wheel drive variant, it runs in two-wheel drive format for normal on road driving. You can select four-wheel drive for towing or venturing off-road. We drove the Outlander across some muddy tracks with a few inclines along the way, it performed confidently. This was no surprise to us, after all Mitsubishi has produced the Pajero for many years, a well regarded competent off-roader. It handles fine on the tarmac too, and is extremely comfortable on a long journey, perfect for the family holidays.
This new Mitsubishi Outlander has the correct blend of styling, performance, comfort and economy to assertively take on its closest competitors including the Hyundai Santa Fe and Honda CR-V. Furthermore, it comes with Mitsubishi’s eight year or 150,000km (whichever comes first) warranty.
