When someone mentions Mitsubishi’s Lancer, I’m instantly drawn to their infamous Evolution model, which has been a two-time winner of the World Rally Championship. Whilst I’d opt for the Evo, in reality, with high fuel prices nowadays, you’d be far better off purchasing Mitsubishi’s latest Lancer. It comes equipped with a 1.8l direct injection diesel engine that offers fantastic performance along with decent fuel economy, it’ll return 5.3l/100km on a combined run. The 150hp it produces is delivered to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox, it’s got a short throw between gears, aided with the potent engine sums up for an enjoyable drive.

The Lancer Diesel is available in just one specification, which is comprehensive, with 16” alloys, Bluetooth, cruise control and air conditioning just some of the features included. The Lancer features Mitsubishi’s “Jet Fighter grille” which they have adopted across their range, it’s a smart uncluttered design that works well.

The Lancer Diesel provides superior performance, respectable fuel economy, low road tax (Band B €156 annual), all combined in a smart package to result in a very complete car C segment car. It’s priced very competitively too, at just €22,995.
