Volvo has added a potent variant to its V40 model line-up, with the introduction of the Volvo V40 T5. The Volvo V40 is a stylish premium hatch that rivals the well-established Volkswagen Golf, Audi A3 and BMW 1-Series. Each of these has their own powerful models to headline their range.

The V40 T5 R-Design comes as standard with a host of specific R-Design features to aid its sporty appearance. Just some of these items include, a unique front grille and bumper, silver matt door mirrors, a rear diffuser, front sports seats, aluminum sports pedals and 17” R-Design alloy wheels.

Powering the T5 is a 2.0-litre five-cylinder petrol engine that produces a healthy 245hp and 350Nm of torque. The engine’s power is fed to the car’s front wheels through a six-speed Geartronic automatic transmission. The engine has a sweet sound unique to five-cylinder powerplants, it’s a smooth unit with a linear power delivery. It’s undoubtedly fast but without the drama or sensation that you would feel in a Golf GTI or Audi S3. The Geartronic transmission provides swift gear changes and is excellent when driving in the city. The ride remains composed at all times, even when you push on along country roads. The suspension has a firm setup but isn’t harsh.

The interior is a pleasant place to be, with a sumptuous leather upholstery. The digital instrument cluster has a TFT colour display with a choice of three displays, elegance, eco and performance. Each one provides a different set of gauges and colours, we selected the performance theme for the majority of our driving, a large rev counter takes centre stage with an electronic speed readout clearly displayed.

The V40 T5 is creditable hot hatch, although there’s possibly not enough of step up from other V40 R-Design models. What’s needed is a Polestar variant that snarls and pops on acceleration. Buy a V40 T5 and you won’t be disappointed, it’s a credible all-rounder and is fast, it’s just not as exciting as some of its competitors.
