The brand new Patch Fiesta ST Championship sponsored by market leading Tyre Trade suppliers, Patch Tyre Equipment, is set to impress as its first ever races take place at Mondello Park in County Kildare on Sunday April 17th. The new Patch Fiesta ST Championship will be contested by Ford Fiesta ST 150 models built between 2004 and 2008 and its aim is to give Fiesta Zetec competitors looking to advance within the sport, somewhere to progress to, as well as attracting drivers from other championships who are looking for a competitive class with a level playing field. Like the class for less powerful 1250cc Fiestas the championship remains under the control of Mondello Park and will stick with a near standard car and tightly controlled regulations.
With close to twenty drivers already registered for the series the championship looks likely to make an immediate impact on the Irish Car Racing scene. The class will feature more modern and powerful Fiesta ST models than those currently in use in the Fiesta Zetec Championship and this has attracted drivers from that series as well as former RT2000, ITCC and other saloon racing class competitors. The Championship will be backed by Patch Tyre Equipment who renew their involvement with Fiesta racing having been the title sponsor of the older Fiesta class for the first two years of its existence. A ten race calendar has been put together which will see the class race at all Mondello Park events over the remainder of the season and this weekend the championship will begin with a double header.
Among the most experienced drivers in the championship will be a trio of ex Supercar drivers, David Maguire, Mark Turley and Hugh McEvoy with other ex RT2000 pilots set to join in as the season progresses. Championship instigator Barry Barrable will make the move from the Fiesta Zetec championship as will John Denning, Hugh Grennan, Stephen Kirwan and Richard Livingstone, amongst others. Kevin Doran and Tom Fahy who have both been ITCC regulars will also join in. The new Patch Fiesta ST Championship begins this weekend with two races and looks set to grow as the season progresses. All the news of the series can be followed on the Mondello Park web site as well as on the championship facebook page, facebook.com/Mondello-Park-Fiesta-ST-Championship.
