During my recent week-long appraisal, I was blessed with particularly pleasant weather, which gave me the perfect opportunity to enjoy some roof-down motoring, in the elegant BMW 6 Series Convertible. The most notable thing when driving with the hood down, is the lack of wind buffeting you experience. Once the removable wind deflector is in place, there’s barely any wind intrusion to upset your hair, or give you a chill on your neck.
Inside, the 6 Series Convertible oozes luxury, you get what you pay for, with prices commencing at €108,000 you would certainly expect to be impressed, and you won’t be disappointed. Amongst the extensive standard equipment list, the 6 Series Convertible comes fitted with Dakota leather upholstery (heated), Xenon headlights, a Satellite Navigation System and Bluetooth phone preparation. My test car had some choice extras to make the driving experience even more pleasurable. One such was the extended leather, which covers the instrument panel and dash in leather.
The inline six-cylinder engine uses a single turbocharger and through the optimisation of Valvetronic, fully variable valve control, it develops 320hp and produces 450Nm of torque. In simple terms, it’s capable of accelerating the car from 0-100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds. There’s a healthy rasp out of the exhausts on acceleration, not too loud to interfere with the ride, but just loud enough to remind you what’s under the bonnet. Whilst the 6 Series Convertible has credible performance statistics, I found it at its best driving in Normal mode for a truly relaxing drive. The eight-speed automatic transmission takes the strain out of gear changes, whilst you can concentrate on the road ahead. Despite the athletic performance of the 6 Series, it delivers a respectable 7.9l/100km for an average combined fuel consumption run. The 6 Series Convertible truly excels as a grand tourer.
