During winter you’ll only see a few hardened motorcyclists and those who commute, riding their motorcycles, as many park their bikes up for the winter. Admittedly my BMW S1000RR wouldn’t be the finest choice for winter riding, not letting the weather deter me, I’ve been fortunate enough to have BMW’s all-round performer the R 1200 GS Adventure. It’s a machine that’s proven its extreme capabilities, on trips such as Ewan Mc Gregor and Charley Boorman’s  32,000 km ‘Long Way Down’ expedition.

This latest model of the R 1200 GS Adventure is fitted with an updated 1,170 cc boxer engine, that’s been tuned to deliver more torque at lower revs, and provides improved acceleration throughout the rev range. With 110hp and 120Nm torque, the GS has sufficient power to deliver an enjoyable ride, with a pleasant rasp emitted from its exhaust under acceleration. For me, the most impressive feature of the GS Adventure is its surefooted handling, you can ride the bike at speed (within the limits of course) through twisty country roads in heavy rain with confidence. The more I ride it, the more impressed I am, it’s immense size aided by the 33 litre fuel tank gives the bike an imposing presence.

The BMW R 1200 GS Adventure is priced from €15,646, my bike has the additional Dynamic and Premium package factory fitted, in addition to side panniers and an alarm. These must-have features include integral ABS, ASC, Electronic Suspension Adjustment and tyre pressure monitors. Included as standard is a two years comprehensive BMW manufacturers warranty and two years Mondial Roadside Assistance.

If you’re after a bike that’ll commute, tour and be exciting to ride all year round, look no further than the BMW R 1200 GS and GS Adventure, they are in my opinion, by far the best all-round motorcycle currently on sale.
