Kia first introduced its quirky Soul in 2008, it was a practical compact SUV. Now they’ve launched an all-new Soul, complete with a new look inspired by the 2012 Track’ster concept. Apart form the newly styled bodywork this new Soul is built on the same platform as the latest Kia cee’d which we know drives and handles with impeccable road manners.
This variant boasts a 29 percent increase in torsional rigidity in comparison to its predecessor. It’s larger too, its overall length has been increased by 20mm and is 15mm wider and 10mm lower. Customers can choose from two trim levels, EX and Platinum, both are powered by the same 1.6-litre CRDi (common-rail direct injection) four-cylinder diesel engine. It offers sufficient power, with 128hp and 260Nm of torque on offer. It’s a quiet efficient unit that can return a combined fuel consumption of 5.0L/100km. The six-speed manual transmission is light to touch and adds to the pleasing driving experience. There’s a great sense of space on offer for all occupants, the driver’s and front seat passenger’s headroom has been increased by 6mm and rear legroom has also been increased by 4mm.
We would envisage the majority of Soul customers to opt for the entry-level EX model, it offers a generous level of specification with 17” alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, front fog lights, rear parking sensors, climate control, cruise control, Bluetooth AUX and USB connectivity all included. Also included is what Kia call Audio mood lamps, these are led light rings that surround the speakers in the front door cards, the lights alternate in sync with the music being played. To be honest I don’t think we’d miss them if they were not standard fitment. The Soul is a practical car that’s effortless to live with on a daily basis, the tailgate is now 60mm wider, allowing easier access for loading and unloading items in the 354 litre luggage compartment.
Kia’s engineers have produced a smart, if somewhat striking looking compact SUV that puts smiles on faces who see it and also on the driver with its airy cabin and quality drive. We believe it’s value for money too, and don’t forget the Soul comes with Kia’s renowned seven year warranty as standard.
