Peugeot Sport has showcased its new 208 R2 rally car, which will be driven by Peugeot Sport driver Stephane Sarrazin ahead of the field, at the fourth round of the 2012 Intercontinental Rallye Challenge, on May 10th to 12th. Powering the 208 R2 is a new 1.6-litre petrol engine that produces 185hp, this engine is based on the 1.6-litre VTi unit that will be available on some models of the new Peugeot 208, which is due to arrive in Ireland this summer. The 208 R2’s power is fed to the front wheels through a five-speed manual, sequential gearbox with the lever mounted on the steering column, to allow a more direct and precise shift. There will be a gravel and asphalt version of the 208 R2, both models will be available in kit form or fully built by Peugeot Sport from November 2012. Commenting on the announcement Xavier Peugeot, Product Director for 208 said, “The 208 carries over the spirit of the 205 and the 206 plus the functionality of the 207 in a thoroughly modern package. With the 208 R2, Peugeot Sport has created an ideal and affordable rally car for someone who wants their first taste of rallying or to simply enjoy their passion.”
